Siege of Caffa (1347)

On the Mongol Empire map as “Caffa”

1347 — During a Horde siege, plague reaches this Genoese port on the Black Sea, traveling along the yam roads and sea lanes opened by the Pax Mongolica. Ships fleeing to Sicily carry the Black Death into Europe. The routes that moved silk and ideas have also carried a disease that kills perhaps a third of Europe. Remember its dead.
