Battle of Diaoyu Fortress (1259)
On the Mongol Empire map as “Diaoyu fortress”
Aug 1259 — Möngke, the Great Khan, dies of dysentery or wounds beneath a Song mountain fortress beyond the reach of his cavalry. The consequences extend across the empire: every front stops, Hülegü turns back from Syria with most of his army, and the ensuing succession war breaks the empire into four.
