Xiaogang village secret contract (1978)
On the Mao’s China map as “Xiaogang”
Nov 1978 — Eighteen farmers in Xiaogang village, Fengyang, Anhui, secretly sign a contract to farm their land as households. If the leaders are jailed, they promise to raise one another’s children. Their harvest jumps. By 1984, the household responsibility system had replaced collective farming across China.
