Shaoshan, Mao’s birthplace (1893)
On the Mao’s China map as “Shaoshan”
1893–today — Mao was born in Shaoshan, a farming village in Hunan. During the Cultural Revolution it became a place of pilgrimage, with millions of Red Guards walking or riding here. Visits declined after 1976, then rose again from the 1990s as a patriotic and commercial cult of Mao revived.
