Chayashan Sputnik People’s Commune (1958)
On the Mao’s China map as “The Sputnik commune”
Apr–Aug 1958 — In Suiping county, Henan, 27 cooperatives joined to form a unit of some 9,000 households. Farming, industry, schools and the militia were run together. Named the Chayashan Sputnik People’s Commune in August, it supplied a charter that became a national model within weeks. By December some 26,000 communes held nearly every rural household.
