Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Wang Guofan’s paupers’ co-operative (1952–55)
On the Mao’s China map as “The paupers’ co-operative”
1952–55 — In Xipu village, Zunhua county, Hebei, Wang Guofan brings 23 poor households into a co-operative. Between them they own three-quarters of a donkey. Mao presents the co-operative in 1955 as an image of the whole nation, arguing that poor peasants wanted collectives to advance faster than his own planners did.
