Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
First Automobile Works (1956)
13 Jul 1956 — A Jiefang (“Liberation”) truck comes off the line in Changchun. China had never made a motor vehicle before. The truck copies the Soviet ZIS-150, and the plant itself was designed and equipped by the Soviets. The Plan placed its showpieces in the northeast, close to the Soviet railway and the old Japanese industrial base.
