Mao’s China · TURNING POINT ·
Anshan Iron and Steel (1953)
Dec 1953 — Soviet troops stripped the Japanese-built steelworks in 1945–46; now Soviet designs, machines and engineers help rebuild it as the flagship of the First Five-Year Plan. Its first three new mills open this month. Across China, steel production rises from 1.35 million tonnes in 1952 to 5.35 million in 1957, four times as much.
