Beidahuang rightist labour farms (1958)
On the Mao’s China map as “The Great Northern Wilderness”
1958 — The Heilongjiang marshes became a destination for some 1,500 rightists sent from Beijing ministries, newspapers and the army to state reclamation farms. Among them were the novelist Ding Ling and the poet Ai Qing. Frontier labor was supposed to punish them and cure them at the same time: they were to be reformed through work.
