Kham rebellion at Lithang (1956)
On the Mao’s China map as “Lithang”
Feb–Mar 1956 — Revolt spreads across Kham, in what is now western Sichuan, as collectivization and the disarming of Tibetan households reach the region. Thousands of rebels and villagers take shelter in Lithang’s great monastery. The PLA besieges it and then bombs it from the air; refugees carry the revolt west into Tibet itself.
