Istrian exodus (1947)

On the Refugee crises map as “The exodus from Pola”

Feb–Mar 1947 — As the peace treaty hands Istria to Yugoslavia, almost all of Pola’s Italian population leaves. Many travel on the steamer Toscana, taking furniture and even the coffins of their dead. Across Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia, roughly 250,000 to 350,000 people left between 1943 and 1956.
