Hedeby (800–1066)

c. 800–1066 — Baltic and North Sea routes met at Hedeby, the great Danish trading town at the base of the Jutland peninsula. Islamic silver, slaves, furs and glass passed through the town. Its earthen ramparts still stand, although warfare destroyed Hedeby in the mid-eleventh century.
