Shanghai International Settlement (1842)
On the Chinese Revolution map as “The International Settlement”
Since 1842 — In the core of Shanghai, foreign councils govern, Sikhs and White Russians serve as police, and Chinese law does not apply. Shanghai is one of some ninety treaty ports, alongside leased Hong Kong, Macau, Guangzhouwan and Qingdao. For Chinese nationalists growing up in the period covered by this atlas, “Extraterritoriality” names a power they come to hate.
