Nanjing Massacre (1937–38)
On the Chinese Revolution map as “Nanjing”
13 Dec 1937–Jan 1938 — After the capital fell, Japanese troops murdered prisoners and civilians and committed rape on a mass scale for weeks. The tribunal counted over 200,000 dead; Chinese memory holds 300,000, and the range remains disputed. The atrocities themselves are not in doubt. The atlas marks Nanjing as a place of memory, and asks nothing else of it.
