Venezuela · Age of Revolutions

Venezuela’s first republic, founded in 1811, fell to earthquake and war. In the years of “war to the death,” Boves’s royalist llaneros and then Páez’s patriot llaneros fought a civil war within the struggle for independence. Carabobo freed Venezuela in 1821, and caudillos inherited it. Bolívar’s birthplace gave the age its greatest liberator, as well as a warning about what liberation wars leave behind.

Venezuela · Haiti and Kenya independence

The French and Haitian revolutions inspired an early revolt in Venezuela. In 1795 José Leonardo Chirino led free Black and enslaved workers at Coro. Two decades later Pétion armed Bolívar at Les Cayes in 1816, and Bolívar decreed emancipation at Carúpano that June; the map’s arrow records the bargain. Venezuela secured independence by 1821, though slavery was not abolished until 1854.
