Britain seized Trinidad from Spain in 1797. It became a late sugar colony, worked by enslaved Africans and, after abolition, by indentured laborers from India. Eric Williams, its first prime minister, had written Capitalism and Slavery (1944), a classic argument about the profits of the Caribbean system. Trinidad and Tobago became independent on 31 August 1962.
