What was Singapore before it was Singapore? The sections below follow this land through every era covered by the Maps of History atlases: who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed. Each line links to the dated map. Modern borders serve as an approximation, as each atlas says on the map itself.

Singapore allowed boat people to land only when another country had guaranteed their resettlement within ninety days. They stayed in a single camp at Hawkins Road. Officials presented the strict policy as the only option for a crowded city. It limited the island’s long-term responsibilities by making admission depend on places available elsewhere.
