Liberia · Decolonization of Africa

The American Colonization Society founded Liberia from 1822 as a settlement for freed Black Americans; it declared a republic in 1847. Along with Ethiopia, Liberia was one of only two African states never colonized, which is why it appears in parchment on this map from the start. Yet an Americo-Liberian elite ruled the indigenous majority for over a century, until Samuel Doe’s bloody 1980 coup ended the old order. Liberia was a founding member of the OAU, and its history shows that formal sovereignty and internal liberty are distinct.
