Siege of Baghdad (1258)
On the Mongol Empire map as “The fall of Baghdad”
Feb 1258 — After a week of bombardment, the caliph al-Musta‘sim surrenders on a promise of safety. Baghdad is sacked, and the caliph is rolled in a carpet and trampled: royal blood must not touch the earth. The 500-year Abbasid caliphate ends, and the books of the House of Wisdom are scattered. The tale of the Tigris running black with ink is legend; the mass graves are real. Remember Baghdad.
