Execution of Ambaghai Khan (c. 1156)
On the Mongol Empire map as “Ambaghai Khan betrayed”
c. 1156 — The Tatars deliver the Mongols’ khan to the Jin, who nail him to a wooden mule and leave him to die. His last message, “avenge me,” begins a vendetta that lasts fifty years. The Jin encourage the fighting, paying tribes to raid each other and culling the steppe every few years to prevent any khan from rising.
