Shanghai Communiqué (1972)

On the Mao’s China map as “The Shanghai Communiqué”

27 Feb 1972 — The communiqué published by the two sides in Shanghai openly states their disagreements. The United States “acknowledges” that Chinese on both sides of the strait hold that there is one China and “does not challenge that position”. It also joins Beijing in opposing “hegemony” in Asia, a word aimed at Moscow.
