New Lanark (1786–1825)

1786 / 1800–1825 — David Dale’s cotton village on the Clyde becomes the setting for Robert Owen’s experiment. Owen provides shorter hours, a school and an “Institute for the Formation of Character”, and excludes very young children. He argues that a profitable enterprise can also treat people decently.
