British blockade of Germany (1914–19)
On the WWI map as “The Northern Patrol”
1914-19 — Operating from Scapa Flow, Britain seals the exits of the North Sea, gradually cutting the Central Powers off from imports. By 1918, German civilian mortality is tens of thousands above its peacetime level. The blockade works slowly, but becomes one of the war’s most decisive weapons.
