Spanish flu pandemic (1918–19)
On the WWI map as “The influenza pandemic”
1918-19 — The “Spanish” flu kills at least 50 million people worldwide, more than the war itself; most of the dead are in the colonized world. One hypothesis traces a mutation through the base camp here at Étaples. Crowded wartime camps and troopships carry the disease around the world.
