Krak des Chevaliers (1142)
From 1142 — the Hospitallers rebuild a hilltop fort as Krak des Chevaliers, the greatest castle of the age, with room for perhaps 2,000 men. Strongholds like it help explain how a few thousand Franks can govern a land they could never fill with their own population.
