c. 1478–79 — Near this frontier stronghold, the Tarascan kingdom’s army destroyed a Mexica invasion led by Axayacatl. It was the empire’s worst defeat before 1519. Fortified frontiers faced one another afterward, and the Tarascans never joined the Mexica against Spain.
