American Civil War · TURNING POINT ·
Richmond, the Confederate capital (1861)
On the American Civil War map as “Richmond”
May 1861 — The Confederacy moves its capital to Richmond, bringing industry and prestige to the seat of government. Its location has a grave consequence: the two capitals stand only a hundred miles apart, and four years of slaughter follow between them. Richmond burns and falls on 3 April 1865. Lincoln walks its streets the next day.
