American Civil War · TURNING POINT ·
John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry (1859)
On the American Civil War map as “Harpers Ferry”
16–18 Oct 1859 — John Brown seizes the federal armory, intending to arm a slave rising. Marines under Colonel Robert E. Lee retake it in three minutes. The raid has consequences far beyond Harpers Ferry: the South arms its militias, while part of the North makes Brown a martyr. The middle ground between them is disappearing.
