Chinese Revolution · TURNING POINT ·
Presidency of Yuan Shikai (1912–16)
On the Chinese Revolution map as “Yuan Shikai’s republic”
1912–16 — Yuan Shikai, the general who brokered the abdication, takes the presidency. He crushes the 1913 “Second Revolution” and dissolves parliament; in 1915 he proclaims himself emperor. Provinces rise against him in succession, and he dies in June 1916 with the state’s institutions ruined. His armies outlast him: every warlord of the next decade is his heir.
