Battle of Luding Bridge (1935)
On the Chinese Revolution map as “Luding Bridge”
29 May 1935 — Under fire, twenty-two volunteers cross a chain bridge over the Dadu gorge while its planks burn. They hold the only crossing before the pursuing forces arrive. The story grew in the telling, but the crossing itself was real. It saved the march from the fate Shi Dakai had met on this same river.
