19 Aug 1153 — after a seven-month siege, Ascalon, the last Fatimid fortress on the coast, surrenders. The Kingdom of Jerusalem has reached its greatest extent. From this point, its territory on the map only shrinks.

— Direct Action Day
16–19 Aug 1946 — The League’s Direct Action Day ignited four days of mutual slaughter in Calcutta. Some 4,000–10,000 people died in the city’s lanes; members of both communities killed and were killed. Partition had become a fact of the streets as well as a lawyer’s formula. Remember them.
