14 Aug 1791 — Boukman and enslaved people from the northern plain met at a night ceremony in the woods and resolved to revolt. Within weeks, a thousand plantations were burning.

14 Aug 1947 — In the new capital, Jinnah took the salute as Governor-General at last. Three days before, he had told the Constituent Assembly: “You may belong to any religion or caste or creed — that has nothing to do with the business of the State.”

— Equalisation of Burdens Act
14 Aug 1952 — The Bundestag passes the Lastenausgleich law to compensate expellees and people whose homes were bombed out. Owners of property that survived the war pay half its 1948 value into a fund, with payments spread over thirty years. By 1986 the fund has paid out more than 130 billion marks, making it one of the largest transfers of wealth in West German history.
