Chancellorsville

1–6 May 1863 — Outnumbered two to one, Lee divides his army twice and wins his masterpiece — but Stonewall Jackson is shot in the dark by his own pickets and dies eight days later. “I have lost my right arm.”
THE MOMENT IN CONTEXT
Lee invaded Pennsylvania to feed an exhausted army, shake Northern confidence, and force a decision away from ravaged Virginia. The two armies met at Gettysburg largely by accident, and the Union troops formed a strong defensive line and held both flanks. On 3 July the Confederate assault remembered as Pickett’s Charge crossed nearly a mile of open ground under artillery and rifle fire, and about half the attackers fell. Lee withdrew with his army damaged but still intact, its offensive power spent for good.
