Saint Lucia · Haiti and Kenya independence

France and Britain exchanged control of Saint Lucia more than a dozen times. In 1795–96 people formerly enslaved and freed by the French Republic fought British troops there in a struggle connected to the wider revolution in the French Caribbean. The British called it the Brigands’ War. Britain held the island from 1803, and Saint Lucia became independent in 1979.
