MAP OF THE INDUSTRIAL WORLD AROUND 1830

What was Argentina before it was Argentina? The sections below follow this land through every era covered by the Maps of History atlases: who ruled it, what it was called, and when control changed. Each line links to the dated map. Modern borders serve as an approximation, as each atlas says on the map itself.

Argentina · Industrial Revolution

Argentina’s grasslands and immigrants helped it prosper by feeding industrial Europe. British capital financed railways, and from the 1880s refrigerated ships took frozen beef to London. Millions of Italian and Spanish migrants worked the farms and ports. On the eve of 1914 Argentina was among the world’s richest countries per head, although it had very little heavy industry of its own.

Río de la Plata (mod. Argentina) · Age of Revolutions

The Río de la Plata expelled two British invasions in 1806–07 and made its May Revolution in 1810; it was never reconquered. What followed was a long dispute over the country’s future, pitting Buenos Aires against the provinces and unitarians against federalists, through to the Rosas dictatorship. San Martín was its contribution to the age: the crossing of the Andes, three countries freed and the great renunciation at Guayaquil.
