Abolition of the han system (1871)

On the Meiji Japan and post-Soviet Russia map as “The domains abolished”

29 Aug 1871 — An imperial decree, read to the former lords in Tokyo, abolished all 261 domains. In their place came prefectures governed by men appointed from the capital. The government assumed the domains’ debts and continued payments to the lords and their samurai, buying their consent to the change.
