Cap-Français (1780s)
1780s — Cap-Français was the richest port in the Americas. Its wealth came from Saint-Domingue’s sugar and coffee, produced by the forced labor of half a million enslaved people. Their work paid for much of France’s Atlantic wealth.

Public domain Annual source outlines can combine imperial claims with areas of control. The labels identify the historical role selected, while dates finer than the source interval are made explicit in these details.
The 1774 record is the closest available footprint of British colonies before the war. The publisher’s 1775 record removes the mainland colonies too early, leaving them unassigned until 1776; the 1774 record keeps them in place at the opening of the revolution. Imperial claims did not necessarily mean settled occupation or Indigenous consent.
Displayed map state a 75 at 1775.3; chapter framing 1775.3. Where finer geometry is unavailable, monthly states use annual source references.
