Lewis chessmen (1831)

On the Norse and Aztecs map as “Uig — the Lewis chessmen”

1831 — Near Uig on the Isle of Lewis, a hoard came to light containing 93 carved pieces, 78 of them chessmen. Made around 1150–1200, probably in Trondheim and mostly from walrus ivory, they show how Greenland’s chief export could travel into the luxury goods of Europe.
