Wilmot Proviso (1846)

On the American Civil War map as “The Wilmot Proviso”

8 Aug 1846 — What would become of slavery in territory taken from Mexico? Pennsylvania Democrat David Wilmot proposes barring it from any such land. The House passes his proviso 83–64, voting almost entirely by section, but the Senate never passes it. From that night, the war’s prize had become a question about slavery.
