Second Battle of Fort Wagner (1863)

On the American Civil War map as “Fort Wagner”

18 Jul 1863 — The 54th Massachusetts, one of the first Black regiments, leads the assault on the battery in Charleston harbor and loses nearly half its strength. Colonel Shaw is buried with his men. Their courage makes an argument about Black soldiers’ place in the Union army: by the end of the war, 180,000 Black soldiers wear Union blue.
