6 Apr 1868 — Before the gods in the Kyoto palace, the young emperor swore five articles: assemblies and public discussion, unity of high and low, freedom to pursue one’s calling, an end to “base customs” and knowledge sought throughout the world. Former samurai had drafted every line of the oath.

6 Apr 1930 — Gandhi had walked 240 miles over 24 days when he reached the shore and picked up a handful of salt mud before the world’s cameras. Within weeks, some 60,000 people were jailed for making salt. The tax was trivial, but the act made it the focus of a spectacle seen around the world.
