Brest-Litovsk

3 Mar 1918 — Trotsky’s “no war, no peace” fails; Germany simply advances until Lenin accepts everything: Russia signs away Poland, the Baltics, Finland and Ukraine — a third of its people, half its industry. The east is won. Now watch what Germany does with it.
THE MOMENT IN CONTEXT
At Brest-Litovsk, the Bolshevik negotiator Trotsky tried to stop fighting without signing Germany’s terms, gambling that Germany would not attack a country that had already laid down its arms. Germany answered with Operation Faustschlag, and its troops advanced rapidly against almost no organized resistance. Lenin then forced the Bolshevik leadership to accept the treaty on 3 March 1918, over the fierce objections of much of his party.
